The company’s Aimsun Live system uses simulation and Artificial Intelligence to predict traffic on the city’s busiest motorway, which handles around 200,000 vehicles a day.
“It allows the operators to manage a smart motorway, so that if it detects an incident, it tells them what traffic conditions will be in 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes in advance,” said Scott Aitken, managing director of Aimsun’s Australia/New Zealand region.
Control centre staff can tweak their response plans to the incident using five different options suggested by the Aimsun Live system, optimising factors such as the reduction of congestion, reduction of emissions or maintaining traffic flows. “They have KPIs that show how each of the response plans ranges against each other.”
The Live software has been around for about 10 years, said Aitken, but is refined for each deployment. Around 15 cities now use the system, Sydney being the most recent. It is incorporated into an Advanced Traffic Management System by a system integrator.
