The deployment is part of a pilot program in Temuco that will let urban and regional bus riders choose their payment method—including contactless smartcards, a mobile app and pre-paid QR codes. The pilot will also allow riders to pay for taxi colectivos—shared taxis that follow a fixed route—through a mobile app called Araucania Te Mueve. Temuco is the capital city of the Araucania Region of Chile.
Cubic worked with the Regional Government of Araucania, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunication and implementation partners CityPlanning and CityMovil to deploy the solution.
According to the company, the pilot program is designed to encourage the use of public transit through discounts, promotions and communication channels that help increase usage and provide transit operators with the information they need to improve services across the region.
“This solution offers an innovative new public transport payment platform that will leverage the latest Fare Payment as a Service (FPaaS) technology to improve access to paid transport around the region,” said Bonnie Crawford, VP and GM, Umo Mobility, Cubic Transportation Systems. “Based on our successful Umo implementations across North America, we worked closely with the team in Temuco to understand the community’s public transit challenges and apply best practices on how they can leverage a simplified fare payment system to serve their riders’ needs.”
