378 Cubic Transportation Systems has signed a strategic alliance and licence agreement with video analytics specialist SenSen Networks of Melbourne, Australia.

The alliance allows Cubic to distribute SenSen’s products and solutions that mesh with Cubic’s NextCity vision, aimed at creating new solutions for smart cities and transportation systems.

SenSen’s analytics system is designed and developed around a platform capable of processing large volumes of real-time unstructured video and other sensory data.

Among planned products are automatic gate line monitoring in transport hubs using video analytics and intelligent video to increase commuter flow and minimise fare evasion; speed; safety and toll enforcement solutions for road authorities; and parking guidance and enforcement.

The agreement “is a good strategic fit for our NextCity vision”, said Matt Cole, executive vice-president, strategy, business development and diversification for Cubic Transportation Systems.

“Advanced video analytics allows our customers to cost-effectively gain deep insights of transportation infrastructure.”

”SenSen operates at the cusp of big data, sensor networks and business intelligence,” said SenSen Networks’ CEO Subhash Challa.  “Our core skill is in analysing big data streams in real time, recognising all interesting events and creating accurate and structured metadata that lead to high-value applications.”

• Larry Yermack, a strategic advisor to Cubic Transportation Systems, is being inducted into the ITS America Hall of Fame today for his achievements in the transportation industry. Yermack played a key role in helping design and bring to market NextCity for Tolling – Cubic’s tolling management system – and was instrumental in the development of E-ZPass, the world’s largest electronic tolling system.

Yermack is also a former chairman of ITS America.
